Interlibrary Loan is open to all EKU faculty, staff, and students. The purpose is to obtain materials which are not available in the Libraries collections for the educational, research, and general needs of the University community. The service is free for all eligible users.

Patrons may submit requests through the ILLiad service. A separate request is required for each item. All patrons using the service agree to honor Interlibrary Loan policies and copyright compliance.

Most items can be obtained within two weeks. Some arrive more quickly while some can take much longer to receive.

Loans are usually for at least two weeks with the option of one renewal. For a renewal, advance notice of at least two days is necessary. Renewals may be made through ILLiad or by phone; however, the lending institution may not routinely grant the request.

Interlibrary Loan policies are based on the American Library Association Interlibrary Loan Code and governed by U.S. copyright law (Title 17, United States Code). Using these guidelines the following will not be requested:

  • Materials for Reserve
  • Textbooks currently being used at EKU
  • Feature films (video or DVD) or non-instructional television programs
  • Recorded music
Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request in excess of "fair use" that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order, if in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
