LIB 301 Students Partner with Kentucky Horse Park

During fall 2012, Education students in Dr. Delinda Dent’s LIB 301 course and EKU Libraries’ Learning Resources Center partnered with the Kentucky Horse Park to create a learning resource for its young visitors.

Education Librarian Heather Beirne instructed the class in utilizing free resources for producing digital stories (short multimedia presentations combining narration, photos, and copyright-friendly media and music from the web).  Then, Dent’s students created biographical digital stories about the horses residing at the park, to be displayed in the Children’s Barn there.  Visitors can use a QR code or touch screen on a horse’s stall to view a digital story about that horse.

Student Polly Whalen commented “[The project] is real practice for what is to come . . . .The most valuable thing I learned is just to seek the resources that are available to me, use the library and the library staff as much as possible, and to provide students [with] first-hand, memorable assignments that will stick with them.”
