Borrowing and Renewing Materials @ EKU Libraries

You may borrow materials from the EKU Libraries if you are a currently enrolled student, faculty, staff, or retired faculty or staff. EKU Libraries also extends borrowing privileges to the following groups:

  • Faculty/Staff Spouse/Domestic Partner
  • Model Students and Children of EKU Employees
  • Alumni Borrowers
  • Service Region Borrowers
  • Visiting Scholars
  • Friends of EKU Libraries
  • Retired Faculty and Staff
  • Students and faculty at other state supported Universities
  • Students and faculty at Berea College
Library Cards
A current barcoded university or library ID card is required to check out materials.

Should your card become lost or stolen, it is important that you notify the EKU Libraries as quickly as possible. If your card is used without your knowledge, you will still be held responsible for items, borrowed, lost or damaged.
Loan Periods
EKU Library books in our circulating collections are loaned for 4 weeks to undergraduates, staff, alumni and area residents. Honors Program and graduate students receive a loan period of 6 weeks. Faculty and graduate assistants receive a loan period of 18 weeks. Popular Collection and Staff Picks books circulate for 2 weeks only. Please be aware that some departments of EKU Libraries may have restrictions on individual items or collections, which may limit their use.

    • Click the "Renew Items" button and note the new due dates.
You may renew your books twice.
Returning Materials
Please return your library materials to the Main Library Circulation Desk, Learning Resources Center Desk or at any of the branch libraries. For your convenience, a book drop is available at the entrance to the main building.
No-Fines Policy, Overdue Notices and Replacement Costs

EKU Libraries does not charge overdue fines. However, if the materials are not returned within 30 days of their due date, they are considered lost. You will be billed for the replacement costs and processing fees and will lose borrowing privileges until materials are returned or payment is received. If you return an item to the library that is damaged, you may be billed for the repair or replacement cost of the item and a processing fee. A replacement copy supplied by the patron will not be accepted. Additionally, EKU students will have a hold placed on their Banner account restricting registration and transcript requests.

You will receive an overdue notice when the material is one day overdue and again after two weeks. Overdue notices are sent to EKU faculty, staff, and students via their EKU e-mail account. All other library patrons will receive printed overdue notices. Bills for replacement costs and processing fees will be printed and mailed to your designated mailing address.

Quantity of Books
All EKU students, faculty, staff, retired faculty/staff and eligible Model students may check out an unlimited quantity of books. Other library patrons are limited to 5 items checked out or on hold at one time.
Periodicals and other non-book materials

Faculty and graduate students with a valid EKU ID may check out any of the following:

  • bound volumes, for one day
  • unbound issues for one day

Please be aware that some non-book materials may have restrictions, which may limit their use.

Proxy Borrower
EKU faculty may authorize assistants to check out Library materials on their behalf. These assistants must be employed by the University or be registered students. With this arrangement, the faculty member agrees to be responsible for any materials borrowed on their behalf, including the return of all materials or the payment of replacement costs and processing fees for items that are lost or damaged. Proxy authorization will be granted for up to one academic year.
Faculty/Staff Spouse/Domestic Partner
Spouses and/or domestic partners of current EKU faculty and staff may borrow materials from EKU libraries.
Model Students and Children of EKU Employees
Students in the 8th grade or above who are children of EKU employees and EKU Model School students 8th grade and above may borrow materials from the EKU Libraries.
  1. The parent/legal guardian of the student must sign an application form, in which the parent/legal guardian acknowledges responsibility for any charges incurred by the student at EKU Libraries.
  2. If the student incurs charges sufficient to block his/her borrowing privileges, the parent/legal guardian's privileges will also be blocked until the matter is resolved.
Fill out the application form and bring to Circulation Desk with the student to obtain the library card.

This non-university borrower's card will allow your child to have the same check-out privileges as an undergraduate student. Books will have a loan period of four weeks, with no limit on the number of books.
Service Region Borrowing
Adults (18 years and older) who are not directly affiliated with the University but reside within the EKU service region may obtain a library card.
